Excellent article reminding us of the unjust and demeaning disrespect, shown over the last 500 years, to the Maya, as well as the intellectual recognition and admiration garnered from over 100 years of Anthropological investigations that focused on their intellectual, social, economic and cultural achievements. Believe that we are still barely scratching the surface of a story covering over 4,000 years of Maya cultural history. Thanks to the people who have sweated and toiled in the vast challenging forest environments of the Maya World, today we are given the opportunity to have a much broader vista of the economic, intellectual and social processes that created some the most important centers and cities of the Yucatan, Chiapas, the Peten and the southern Highlands before the europeans(there is nothing proper about this noun) came. As we stand today on the shoulders of these intellectual giants, the last 40 years have seen an explosion and growth of/in knowledge and information that make the concept of “paradigm shifts” seem like exploding supernovae all over the night sky. Our challenge today is to make sure this information and knowledge (History) is shared and given back to all the Maya people so that they may be truly empowered with great pride and honor for who and what their ancestors were.
