The Ornamental Red Ginger
Today’s Belize Photo of the Day is the Red Ginger and its scientific name is Alpinia purpurata. The Red Ginger plant, originally from the South Pacific is a tall, ever-green plant which has bright red floral bracts and inconspicuous white flowers.
The above picture was taken in front of Chaa Creek’s Butterfly House in the Cayo District of Belize. It wonderfully compliments the lodge’s panoramic view of the Maya Mountains and Belizean Rainforest.
The actual flower is a miniature whitish bloom that appears behind the bract but the flower is best characterized by its stem and beautiful red bloom which can measure as much as 8 inches in length. This brightly-colored flowering plant grows very well in rich soil, wet habitats, and in dry areas. The best part about this plant is that it does well in full sunlight and blooms all year around growing up to 9 feet in height.
The Red Ginger is very popular in making ornamental flower arrangements and can be seen in special presentations at many luxurious hotels and resorts in Belize. It serves well for this purpose as the flowers can last up to three weeks before fading.

Wow, great post.Really thank you! Great.
[...] In Belize, these decorative florets are very famous in bouquets and are usually mixed with other exotic flora such as the ornamental Red Ginger. [...]
Have not seen this beautiful plant here in Queensland Australia
Any idea where I might be able to purchase this in Australia ?
We have quite a collection of Ginger plants, Canna and Calla lillies
