We are not fancy people and are somewhat intimidated by fancy places, but the draw of jungle trails, a rainforest preserve, a Mayan underworld, Mayan medicine and holistic healing (tickling into my career in nursing) is strong. Ceremony is an added bonus. The nature in which the contest is offered is also a positive for me….to know that you, the people who are presenting this opportunity, are enjoying doing so in the spirit of hospitality and giving, and having fun with it!

I first read about the Mayan culture in high school. What really struck me back then was the brutality of the Spanish towards the Aztecs, the Mayans, and other natives. The more you read about it the more you discover how much was lost, burned, and destroyed. Try to research the Mayan culture and you’re stuck with a lot of speculation, considering there are only 3 existing documents. Their breadth of knowledge of math and astronomy and who knows what else that was lost; it really haunts you.

What comes to mind when you think of Belize? For most, this country evokes images of turquoise waters, mist-shrouded mountains, lush tropical rainforests, Mayan ruins, and vibrant colors everywhere.

Prospective college students who are worried that college may get in the way of traveling may find that online learning is a great alternative to a rigid college schedule. Whether you’re on the beach or deep in the rain forests, as long as you’ve got a Wi-Fi connection and a laptop, you’re good to go. And if you’re going to Belize, there are a few simple tricks to keep your costs down and travel safely.

My boyfriend and I were planning our trip to Belize today and noticed this amazing opportunity to be a part of an Eco-tourism package.
