“Over the years we’ve seen an increase in bookings for Belize family vacation packages to celebrate birthdays, wedding anniversaries, graduations and other significant events. A few years ago one family asked if Mother’s Day was celebrated in Belize, and if we could do something special for their mother.

Many North Americans have this misconception that Belize is a distant and forgotten land deep in the rainforests of Central America. I traveled with my husband, Adam, and our first stop after arriving into Belize was the Belize Zoo. We have visited this zoo a few times before and find it to be a must see on every trip. The zoo habitats are the most natural I’ve encountered with wonderful views of the diverse wildlife that inhabits the country. Adam loves to visit the tapirs and my favorites are the spider monkeys and the jabiru storks. We were impressed with the new walking paths at the zoo and updates since our last visit.

Ms Fleming said that people from around the world have been converging at the Belizean eco resort for days of educational workshops and hands-on training in Maya skills such as tortilla and chocolate making, thatching with jungle palm fronds and the use of medicinal plants in preparation for the grand ceremonies that will take place on the evening of December 21 2012.

Our final day we spent hikng around the resort followed by a horseback riding tour with Robert- who was incredible. We were beginners, he took us through the trails of the property and provided some good Mayan history lessons, too. You really can’t beat riding a horse through the amazing jungle trails.
