We felt like we had a real overseas, exotic vacation, as well as a perfect, traditional Easter with all the familiar trimmings in Belize’s Chaa Creek. So, rather than fight the crowds and heat this summer, we’re taking our big vacation over the Easter holidays, spending time together and creating more memories I’m sure we’ll be talking about for a very long time.

Southwest Airlines is preparing to fly from Houston to Belize in October 2015 and according to Southwest’s Senior Communications Advisor, Brad Hawkins, the airline will allow passengers to and from Belize to carry two bags of up to 50 pounds each for free, which, last time we checked, can tack up to a couple hundred dollars on the price of a flight with competing airlines.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek has just announced a new Belize vacation package that allows travellers to get up close and personal with one of the the world’s largest animals, the whale shark. The new package, to run from June 2 to 12, 2015, is the first of its kind ever to be offered by the Belizean eco resort, and is in partnership with Robert’s Grove, a Belizean Caribbean resort based near the picturesque coastal fishing village of Placencia.

As expected, 2014 was as record breaking year for Belize, with 1,207,386 tourist arrivals recorded by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). Last year also saw Belize break the long sought after but heretofore elusive figure of 300,000 overnight visitors, a tourism goal akin to a runner breaking the four minute mile, with the BTB figures showing a record 321,220 overnight visitors. This represents a very impressive 9.2 percent increase from the year before.

Belize is the northeastern-most of all the Central American nations, making it the easiest of all to access from the U.S. You can be there in as little as two hours from Houston, or closer to three from a number of other cities in the eastern United States.Sure, expats move abroad looking for a change from their former lives and culture. But it’s still nice to be able to get back to visit friends and family without too much time or hassle. Not to mention, the shorter, less expensive flights make loved ones more likely to come visit you as well. Besides, despite its proximity, Belize offers plenty in the way of new and different experiences. However, one important factor that isn’t different from North America is the language.
