Last year in October we hosted Roni Weiss, a respected travel blogger from New York. During his stay at Chaa Creek, he toured our Butterfly Farm, Natural History Museum, Medicine Trail and also went horseback riding within our private 365 acre nature reserve.

Belize may be small, but it is not homogenous. With a population around 321,000, the tiny country enjoys a diversity of ethnicities that is undeniably stimulating and improbably serene. It is indigenously Maya; politically Creole (most business owners and political figures); and the largest ethnic group is Mestizo (of mixed Spanish and Amerindian descent). While those are the biggest populations, at least half a dozen other prominent ethnic groups call Belize their home.

My family is so excited about a new year’s resolution we just made that we want to share it around. At the dinner table the other day we were talking about the new year and what it had in store for us, and the discussion got around to New Year’s resolutions. As usual with my teen son and daughter, they began challenging each other to come up with the coolest, most do-able resolution for 2012, and without noticing, we parents were soon drawn into the contest.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek in the Cayo District of Belize has some pretty awesome horse stables. We went riding with them on a guided trail ride tour with an awesome guide who showed us everything from local wildlife to trees and fruit. We rode to an unexcavated Maya site on top of a hill overlooking the beautiful rainforest sourrounding Chaa Creek.

We had previously shared a blog post and video featuring My Back Yaad visiting Chaa Creek when shooting video footage for their Destination Cayo episode. Last weekend the video aired on KremTV and it didn’t disappoint audiences as they received a sweet taste of some of the activities that the Cayo District has to offer.

Belize’s well-traveled Cayo District is loaded with outdoor adventures – cave tubing, zip lining, mountain biking, jungle hiking, horseback riding, river canoeing, bird watching, temple exploration, and the list goes on. What we really liked about staying at Chaa Creek was that we could do most activities within the nature reserve.

Why is Responsible Travel Important?

If our actions contribute to destruction of the environment then someone else has to clean up the mess while the flora and fauna become innocent victims of our carelessness. If everyone enjoyed their environment by keeping in mind that we are accountable for our actions, pollution would diminish..

Nature Quest Sweepstakes – Essay #2

My first visit to the Lodge at Chaa Creek was in the summer or 2009.  Traveling on a tight budget, my friend and I stayed in a cabin at the Macal River Camp, a cheaper, “no frills” alternative to the suites and cottages.  We could not have been more pleased with the campsite, surrounded by rainforest and located just above the river.  It was such a pleasure to wake up each morning to the sounds of the various creatures in …

A Great Place For Horselovers!

Many of the reviews for this place say it all – beautiful accommodations, fabulous staff, great food (come hungry!) but for anyone that is interested in horseback riding this place offers a treat for you. Granted, one often gets stuck in the “walk” rides with rank beginners but if you ask for an advanced ride and are good enough to participate with the wranglers, you will have a great adventure. We rode through beautiful scenery, were blessed with an archeology …

Ponies at the stable!!

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good

A horse is the projection of peoples’ dreams about themselves – strong, powerful, beautiful – and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.  ~Pam Brown

Small children are convinced that ponies deserve to see the inside of the house.  ~Maya Patel

Again the early-morning sun was generous with its warmth.  All the sounds dear to a horseman were …
