With a bit of comparison shopping, a summer holiday in an exotic Caribbean rainforest setting may cost less than taking a vacation at home, according to a vacation planning expert at Belize’s The Lodge at Chaa Creek. Bryony Fleming Bradley, who is also Chaa Creek’s assistant GM, said that the popular eco resort’s all-inclusive Belize vacation packages can result in big savings by removing any hidden costs from a holiday. “What always blows out vacation budgets is the many surprises and hidden costs people seem to encounter when travelling, whether overseas or in their own country,” she said. “As much as you plan, things always seem to arise that end up costing more than expected.”

Officially known as the Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, the annual event gives 24 young Belizeans a chance to learn about their natural world through a mix of adventure, social interaction, fun and hands-on education aimed at instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility for the environment, according to program sponsors Mick and Lucy Fleming.

The eco-campers had a chance to tour the operation and recognize many local plants, trees, herbs, and produce. They were also treated to some live action as we met the sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, heifers, and even the bull. To top off the farm adventure, the kids had a chance to stick their entire arms into the compost piles, as Mr. Mick explained to them how everything in an organic farm is connected, right down to the animals’ feces! No wonder they all washed their hands so well before lunch. An afternoon filled with swimming, canoeing, and lots of fun in the sun has left this blogger’s brain on empty so we will let the pictures tell the rest of the tale.

After a delicious breakfast, the eco-campers began to collect leaves, plants, and many other interesting natural things they could use to create a unique cover for their jungle journal. These journals were not merely for presentation value as campers immediately began using them to write down contact information for their new friends, thoughts on the camp so far, and enlightening facts that they learned throughout the day, during their other fun experiences.

We are stewards of our home, Earth. Planet Earth is the greatest treasure God created and we need to appreciate it as our own kingdom of happiness. As guardians of our planet, everyone of us needs to make it our goal to protect and preserve all that our Earth encompasses. The forest, it’s flora and fauna, our rivers and seas, our atmosphere all depend on us, it’s inhabitant, to let it remain for our future generations. Becoming an Eco kid will give more reasons to want to care for our environment.

This summer camp will help me because the flora and fauna of Belize live in our environment and I want to immerse myself in it. Recently in Houston, Texas I was part of an eco team that built a green house and we went around picking garbage and when we would find a plastic bottle we would put it in the recycle bin.

My name is Adreano Finnetty. I am currently a Standard 6 student attending Holy Redeemer Primary School in Belize City. Since I was born, I realized how fascinated I am with nature and the Earth itself. I have taken time and effort to learn as much as possible about nature: from the simplest of organisms, like flowers with the power of pollination; and, bugs which lay millions of eggs every single day; to animals of brute strength like lions and sharks.

Even though summer is officially more than six weeks away, The Lodge at Chaa Creek is already preparing for another Summer of Love program after last year’s success, the Belizean eco resort’s marketing administrator Larry Waight said today. “Last year was our first real Summer of Love, and since we enjoyed it almost as much as our guests, we decided to do a repeat. “We chose packages that bring people together. Our Honeymoon package is an obvious choice, but the Family Adventure package and Inland Expedition were…

I want to be an Ecokid so that I can protect the environment from the pollution of the cars because we are destroying our world. People if we cut the plant and the grass is like if we are killing someone very important. Because we are killing a piece of land where children can have fun. We will not be able to respire good air if we live in garbage. Because we have no air people we need to discontinue the chemical in the water.

There’s something about summer in Belize that fosters feelings of romance and togetherness. Maybe it’s the lush greenery after the winter dry season, or the effect of the cool Caribbean Sea breezes, the amazing summer sunsets, or the slower pace of the summertime months. Whatever the reason, amor is in the air, and here at Chaa Creek we’re declaring a Summer of Love.

Why I want to be an eco-kid
In this developed and materialistic world it seems that no one ever takes the time to carefully scrutinize the irreplaceable and extraordinary gifts that we have been given, to dwell in the serenity and be one with nature. In present day it appears that majority of the population would choose jewellery and status symbols over biodiversity, serenity and other aspects of nature .I have seen aspects of the …

WHY I WANT TO BE AN ECO KID
I want to be an Eco kid because there isn’t much to do in Corozal this summer. The camp sounds like so much fun. I like to recycle, for example I use both sides of the paper and fill the paper completely with words or drawings so I can help save trees.
I came first in science in my standard three class. I really want to learn more about nature and saving …
