Belize Joins Virtuoso® Network as Preferred Destination

Partnership will Help Reveal “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret” to Virtuoso’s Cache of Experiential Travelers

BELIZE CITY (September 7, 2011) – The Belize Tourism Board today announces a partnership with Virtuoso® – the leading network of travel advisors offering a “Return on Life” through meaningful travel experiences – to become a Preferred Destination.  The alliance with Virtuoso will provide Belize with access to over 300 travel agencies employing more than 6,000 travel specialists in 22 countries, ranging from North and South America to the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand.

Virtuoso’s relationships provide the network’s clientele with some of the most rewarding, educational and robust cultural exchanges in the world.  As a Preferred Destination, Belize now has access to this highly valuable cache of travelers with a keen interest in intercultural experiences. Belize’s unrivaled tourism offerings – like mystical Mayan archeological sites, world-class diving and snorkeling at the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef and incredibly diverse wildlife – are a natural fit for an audience motivated by collecting life experiences through travel.

“Our partnership with Virtuoso will provide Belize with unprecedented access to an extremely valuable audience of travelers who possess a ‘depth of purpose’ in their travel – those who want more than just your typical beach vacation.  In fact, Virtuoso members have already started booking Belize,” said Mariam Roberson, Chairlady, Belize Tourism Board.  “We are very proud of this recognition, which speaks volumes about Belize and its tourism industry, and we look forward to reaching even more experience-driven travelers via the Virtuoso Network.”

According to the Virtuoso Travel Dreams survey, which garnered over 14,000 responses in spring 2011, archeological exploration and historical pilgrimage are the number two and three “Most Desired Enriching Experiences” for its clientele.  With 62% of these travelers reporting that they plan to take three-plus vacations this year, Belize is in position to capitalize on a burgeoning audience whose travel interests lie in culture, history and sustainability – all a natural fit for the country.

Belize, a natural gateway to unparalleled travel experiences, is an alluring prospect for adventure seekers, cultural enthusiasts and eco-tourists alike.  With 40% of the country under some sort of protection, and 66% still forested, Belize is one of the world’s last unspoiled places.  This makes it an attractive option for tourists looking for select experiences that take them off the beaten path.
