The Great Blue Hole is actually a giant sinkhole, an underwater version of the many cenotes scattered throughout the Belize and Yucatan mainland. It’s said to have been formed in stages some 150,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago years when the oceans began to rise and limestone caves were flooded.

The recent announcement of direct flights from Los Angeles to Belize has been hailed by Belizean resort owners as a boon for the local tourism industry. According to the Lodge at Chaa Creek’s marketing director Larry Waight, the new service, scheduled to begin December 2013, will encourage more west coast travellers to consider the Caribbean as a viable alternative to destinations like Mexico’s Pacific coast and Hawaii. The direct flights will also make it easier for members of Belize’s large diaspora, many of whom reside in California, to visit family and friends and spend holidays in their country of origin, he added. “It very good news for the entire Belize tourism industry, as it makes a Belize vacation more viable to a larger audience.

The 30-mile-long, 8-mile-wide lagoon is the location of the Blue Hole, a dive spot that was made famous by Jacques Cousteau and that is a favorite destination of dive boats from Belize City, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker.

Kate Walsh, the famous Doctor Addison Montgomery on the hit series, Grey’s Anatomy, was in Belize over the past weekend. But she wasn’t here on vacation, she was here as an Oceana activist. Walsh, whose visit was to raise awareness on Belize’s Barrier Reef and the fragile ecosystem, met with local journalists for a one day visit to the Blue Hole.

I’ve been to scuba heaven and it’s in Belize.

Like most divers, I’ve heard great things about scuba diving in Belize, but for various reasons first travelled further afield to places like Tonga, the Cook Islands and Australia. They were all superb, but what a surprise to discover that the absolute best diving to be found anywhere, and I do mean anywhere, is in the tiny little Central American country of Belize.

The Legendary Blue Hole

Like a giant pupil in a sea of turquoise, the Blue Hole has become the most famous dive site in all of Belize and continues to attract divers from all over the world, vivid of exploring the numerous wonders of this spectacular geographical phenomenon.
The Blue Hole is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO, it lies approximately 60 miles off the mainland out of Belize City.
