Officially known as the Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, the Eco-Kids camp is held each year at Chaa Creek’s rustic Macal River Camp, down the Macal River from the main resort and the Natural History Centre, Butterfly Farm, Maya Medicinal Plant Trail, Hilltop Spa and other rainforest attractions.

This year is the “New Beginning” for the Maya. I love to climb Maya temples and see the jungle from a new dimension. Imagine if I found an Ancient Maya spear head, clay pot or jade artifact? There is so little that is known about the Ancient Maya it would be amazing to find cool stuff to show the world and tell their story.

The Eco Kids Camp 2011 was comprised of 24 children from all over Belize who received a chance to visit Chaa Creek for an entire week to learn about Belize’s Biodiversity, the Ancient Maya, Traditional Healing, Land Conservation, Solid Waste Management, Responsible Tourism, and Belize Wildlife.

I want to be a eco kid so that I may learn to recycle things and make a better place out of our country. No matter how small I am I can always help my home country, especially if I live in Belize.

My adventure in Chaa Creek was absolutely brilliant! When I arrived I said to my self, “Wow this place is so beautiful, I’m going to have fun here!” I was so excited and quite nervous! I was going to meet new people and be away from my parents for the first time.The first person that I met was a girl named Jasmine.

Another exciting  Eco-kids camp day began with a cool and overcast morning settling upon Chaa Creek’s Macal River Camp were 14 sleepy-eyed children were digging into fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, stewed beans and home made flour tortillas. After a song infused breakfast the children released the Blue Morpho butterflies that they had hatched in their own hatchery over the last few days. The butterfly release was accompanied by original camp poems and then the real excitement began!

The program aims to instill memorable values that will have an impact on the way children conduct their lives, their relationship with our fragile Earth, and the sustainable development of our future.

In my opinion our world is starting to have a down drop, but it’s not like we can’t stop it! We have to stop  deforestation, burning fires, littering,we can also start using electric engines for cars!   We also have to stop killing creatures, there is a lot of endangered creatures out there, for example we have our beautiful Jaguars endangered, we also have the beautiful Keel Billed Toucan endangered, there are thousands and thousands of other creatures …
