Being an Eco Kid

By: Michael A. Longsworth,  — years old

The following is a submission of one of our applicants to this year’s Chaa Creek Eco Kids Summer Camp.

Officially known as the Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, the annual event gives 24 young Belizeans between the ages of 8 and 13 a chance to learn about their natural world through a mix of adventure, social interaction, fun and hands-on education aimed at instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility for the environment.

The Eco Kids are selected after submitting a 300 word written essay which is reviewed and shortlisted by the Chaa Creek scholarship committee with the winners going on to attend the summer camp.

Chaa Creek will be providing all lodging, three healthy meals and snacks each day, structured educational activities, arts and craft materials, tee shirts, 24-hour camp counselor supervision, and guided tours conducted by licensed naturalist guides.

Good luck potential Eco Kids!

Being an Eco Kid

Eco Kids Summer Camp 2013

The reason I want to be an Eco kid is because, I want to help protect the environment.  Ways I can help protect the environment is by saving the earth is by; being one with nature and live a healthy life.

The first way of the environment is by recycling, planting trees, cleaning up our neighborhood.  When we recycle we will be saving a lot of our marine animals.  Animals like the dolphin, turtles and sharks.  When we throw plastic in the sea these animals eat the plastic and other garbage that floats around in the seas and oceans.  These animals cannot digest plastic or the plastic get stuck in their mouth or throat and the animal dies.

Second is by planting more trees.  When we plant more trees we will be helping to keep the air clean and we will have oxygen, fruits and vegetables.  The trees give us oxygen, which people breathe in and the carbon dioxide we breathe out is taken in by the trees.  The trees take in the carbon dioxide, which is poison to human beings and recycles it for us.  And these same trees provide us with food – fruits, vegetables and even medicine.

Number three is by cleaning up our neighborhood.  Picking up the trash and putting it in its proper place the garbage.  We can also ride a bike; use a skateboard walk rather than driving in a car, motorcycle or anything that uses gas or fuel.  These gases damage the oxygen and the ozone.  When the ozone is damage the weather becomes confused due to the warming of the planet.

Being an eco Kid will allow me to be one with nature and responsible.  This will allow me to live a healthy life. The reason is because I will know how to protect the environment, recycle and the use of planting of trees.  We have to protect our world and do whatever we can to make it last as long as possible.  I am sure Eco camp will teach me more ways to “to help protect the environment”.
