Why I would like to be an eco-kid

By: Lillian Aguirre,  11 years old

The following is a submission of one of our applicants to this year’s Chaa Creek Eco Kids Summer Camp.

Officially known as the Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, the annual event gives 24 young Belizeans between the ages of 8 and 13 a chance to learn about their natural world through a mix of adventure, social interaction, fun and hands-on education aimed at instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility for the environment.

The Eco Kids are selected after submitting a 300 word written essay which is reviewed and shortlisted by the Chaa Creek scholarship committee with the winners going on to attend the summer camp.

Chaa Creek will be providing all lodging, three healthy meals and snacks each day, structured educational activities, arts and craft materials, tee shirts, 24-hour camp counselor supervision, and guided tours conducted by licensed naturalist guides.

Good luck potential Eco Kids!

Why I would like to be an eco-kid

Introduction

Hi! My name is Lillian Aguirre. I live in hope creek village on the Stann creek valley road. I am attending hope creek Methodist school. I am in the class of standard 4. My favorite sport is volleyball, my father is a diver at Marisol caye, and my mother goes to school at the junior college in Dangriga. She loves nature as well as I do; by the way I am 11years old!

Eco Kids Summer Camp 2013

I want to be an eco-kid because I love nature and would like to help to protect the rainforest. When I visit the rainforest, the shade from the canopy of tree refreshes me. The smell of green trees relaxes me and the singing of the birds inspires me. I hope and pray that I might find and fallow a jaguar’s paw prints on a trail or I may look up high above and see an owl staring at me. If I am lucky I hope to see soldier ants carrying leave to build their homes wild pigs grunting by howler monkeys hanging on trees branches like thunder.

When I was younger I could remember that I loved to grow plant. It did not matter what it was, I used to plant lot of seeds that I found. I also would like going around and ask my mom if she could spare a carrot top, a potato’s eye or a sweet peppers seed. I would plant everything that I got and I would check them every morning I have watered the plants but most of my attempts failed. I still feel the same sentiments of wanted plants.

I want to be an eco-kid camper 2013 because I would like meet younger person and as well make new friends. With this Experian’s am looking forward to gain confidents about my wants of becoming an eco-kid. Am ready to work and to do whatever I have to do to protect the environment. With the help of the experts in the camp I know that everything will be to the best of ours.
