How to make Belize Fry Jacks – Authentic Belize Food Staple!

One of the more popular and mouth-watering breakfast meals in Belize includes refried beans, eggs, cheese, bacon or ham and fresh fruits all perfectly paired with Belizean fry jack. Fry jacks are deep fried dough pieces that can be shaped in squares, circles or triangles. Making delicious Belizean fry jack will be relatively easy and fast with this recipe we have prepared for you. You can make this in the comfort of your home and share a part of Belize food with your family & friends!
Ingredients to make Belizean Fry Jacks:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
- 1 ½ cup water
- Vegetable oil for frying
Directions to make Belizean Fry Jacks:
Sift
Add Shortening
Add water for dough
Divide dough
Let Rest
Add flour to countertop
Roll dough
Cut to desired size
Make sure is very hot
Fry until golden brown
Sift flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Add shortening into a flour mix. Add water, a little at a time, to make a soft, but not sticky dough. Divide dough into two rounds. Let rest for 15 to 20 minutes. Lightly flour counter top. Roll dough out to about 10 to 12 inches round. Cut lengthwise into 2 to 3-inch strips and then crosswise to desired size. Make sure the oil is very hot for fluffy jacks. Fry on each side until golden brown.
