BELIZE CITY, BELIZE, CA – Green Globe, the leading certification program for sustainability in travel and tourism and The International Centre for Responsible Tourism-Belize (ICRT-Belize), Green Globe Partner in Belize, congratulates The Lodge at Chaa Creek in the Cayo District of Belize, Central America on achieving Green Globe Certification. Throughout the certification and auditing process, The Lodge at Chaa Creek made significant investments to ensure that the resort’s infrastructure met the highest environmental standards. A key focus for the certification for the Lodge at Chaa Creek was their overall commitment to the environmental aspects impacted or affected by their operations. Chaa Creek has created a unique stewardship for their immediate area of operation through setting up a private reserve, practicing organic gardening, controlling river side erosion and assisting in onsite and in-country research by visiting students, professors and universities from abroad and locally.
In addition, the Lodge’s extensive corporate social responsibility initiatives, which were introduced to assist the local community’s schools, students and teachers, also played an important role in the certification process. The various programs encourages local students to visit the onsite Butterfly Exhibits and Natural History Center and allows local guides to provide the needed interpretations to the visiting students and guests. The resort organizes many events to benefit the over 98% local staff from the nearby villages such as in house training, field trips to other areas of interest and offers every day mentoring and guidance.
“At Chaa Creek, we are always reaching for more since we are the first in Belize to be certified and as such act as mentor to the many other Hotels seeking to be certified under Green Globe”, said Mike Green, Loss Prevention Manager and on site Green Team Leader at The Lodge at Chaa Creek. “Our staff members, our visitors, our fellow hoteliers, our owners and the many children and guests that visit us each year appreciate our efforts from a common sense and an environmentally conscious approach to make a positive impact on the local community”.
Kenrick Theus, ICRT-Belize Director and one of four in-country Green Globe Auditors said, “The Lodge at Chaa Creek has excelled in an area that is mostly new to many hotels in Belize. They were the first to be certified in country and have done so well to put us on the world map and now with the extension of the certification process to all, they will again assist others through their agreement to act as mentors and leaders when and where possible. The possibilities for Belize are endless and we are most proud of them and their efforts. Green Globe in Belize has a home and a strong presence through such assistance and cooperation like the one we have with Chaa Creek.”
