For many people, the time to go south is during the winter, and this makes good sense, especially for escaping the cold weather and being able to have a swim in December.
However, for me, the summer months are perfect for visiting Belize, and the great weather is just one reason why I’ll be heading there again for a summer vacation.
Belize is blessed with one of the best climates in the world. The yearly temperature is around 84° F (29°C) without much fluctuation between seasons. During even the hottest summer months, coastal sea breezes and Belize’s large tracts of jungle and rainforests provide cooling relief. Instead of four seasons, Belize really only has two – the wet and the dry. And while they both have their charms, I like the wet, which runs roughly from June through December – things are greener, the jungles more lush and the typically short summer afternoon rains are refreshing. June and July have the most showers, with a break in late July and August known as the “little dry”. Here’s how the summer months usually break down:
June in Belize
June is typically warm, with temperatures in Belize averaging 86°F (30°C) to 82°F (28°C). But the fresh easterly breezes off the Caribbean Sea and short afternoon showers keep things cool and make June a generally pleasant month.
July in Belize
July is another lovely month, with temperatures ranging from an average high of 86°F (30°C) to lows of 79°F (26°C) for a monthly average of 82°F (28°C). The weather is much the same as June with a bit more rain, especially in the mornings, providing relief from the heat along with those wonderful easterly Caribbean breezes. I actually enjoy the thunderstorms that begin appearing at night as they make for a true tropical experience.
August in Belize
Belize’s summer weather begins to change during August as drier winds from the west replace the easterly sea breezes. August marks the “Little Dry” and sees a decrease in rainfall and rise in temperatures, which range from 86°F (30°C) highs to average lows of 78°F (26°C). However, the overall average temperature for August is still a very pleasant 82°F (28°C).
The wet season is also hurricane season in Belize, but it’s really not much of a worry these days with tracking, warnings and regional cooperation having come very far over the years. Belize doesn’t get very many direct hits and the country’s safety, evacuation and other procedures are well honed and very effective.
Even though Belize is still uncrowded, it is even less so in the winter, so you can have some Maya temples almost to yourself, and resorts, tour operators, guides and others in the hospitality business are very happy to see you.
In addition to the great weather, you can also find some great summer vacation deals and all inclusive summer vacation packages that make it even more affordable to visit Belize in summer, and with school holidays, it’s a great time to plan a summer family vacation in Belize.
