The following is a submission of one of our applicants to this year’s Chaa Creek Eco Kids Summer Camp.

Officially known as the Children’s Summer Camp Scholarship Program, the annual event gives 24 young Belizeans between the ages of 8 and 13 a chance to learn about their natural world through a mix of adventure, social interaction, fun and hands-on education aimed at instilling a sense of wonder and responsibility for the environment.

The Eco Kids are selected after submitting a 300 word written essay which is reviewed and shortlisted by the Chaa Creek scholarship committee with the winners going on to attend the summer camp.

Chaa Creek will be providing all lodging, three healthy meals and snacks each day, structured educational activities, arts and craft materials, tee shirts, 24-hour camp counselor supervision, and guided tours conducted by licensed naturalist guides.

Good luck potential Eco Kids!

Eco Kids Summer Camp 2013

I am an eco warrior. I love animals especially sea animals. I sometimes get to go diving with my dad. I have my junior PADI and I got certified in Mexico. I also have swum with wild manatees, bull sharks, sea turtles, and all those kind of things.

My house is located in the middle of the jungle. In Belize they burn a lot of things, including the jungle, and I am against that because it is bad for the air and bad for nature.

My family owns a little resort called the Belize Jungle Dome. We take people to places like Tikal, A.T.M., cave tubing, zip lining, and scuba diving. Out of all I think that my favourites are A.T.M. and the black hole drop. I have been on almost every single tour.

When I go on the tours a guide comes with us. Usually it is our guide David. I learn a lot from them. One of my favourite things is the history of the Mayan ruins. My favourite animal would be the bull shark and snakes.

I also try to keep the earth as clean as I can. I pick up garbage when I see any and I always have to sacrifice my room for our new baby chicks that we get like every month.

I am thinking of maybe becoming a tour guide or a dive master when I grow up and I can tell the same stories that I have picked up from other awesome tour guides that I have been with. I will be able to spot things in the ocean and tell them about all the sea life. This is why I would be an awesome eco warrior.
