“Small Country, Big Heart” – Belize’s Olympic Team

30 July 2012 6 Comments

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is asking all Belizeans, whether at home or abroad, to join the popular eco resort in supporting the Belize Olympic Team while they compete in the London 2012 Olympics.

Marketing Administrator Larry Waight said that any show of support – even just an email, tweet or Facebook acknowledgement can go a long way in boosting the teams’ morale, and added that Chaa Creek is happy to pass messages of support on to the team through their blog.

“Chaa Creek has always been a strong supporter of sports in Belize, and we’ve been following the formation of the 2012 Olympic Belize dream team over the past year with much interest,” Mr Waight said. “There’s no doubt that this is one of our best teams ever, and we want to ensure that they know that all Belizeans and the many friends of Belize worldwide are cheering for them.”

Mr Waight said that people can post messages of support on the Belize Travel Blog and that they will be forwarded to the team throughout the Olympics.

“We may be a small country, but we have a big heart when it comes to looking after each other and I’m sure all of us are wishing the 2012 Olympic Team Belize all the best,” he said.

The Belize London 2012 Olympics team is comprised of Kaina Martinez and Kenneth Medwood competing in Athletics and Eddermys Sanchez in Judo. They were selected from competitors in ten different sports and managed by the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association working with Belize’s national governing bodies and the Belize National Sports Council Association.

Mr Waight said it was also significant that Team Belize has adopted the UK national children’s charity WellChild and is donating a percentage of the funds they raise to the charity. The WellChild organisation works to care for and support seriously ill children and their families across the UK. It’s Royal Patron is England’s Prince Harry, who visited Belize earlier this year, staying at Chaa Creek while exploring the nearby Maya Temple of Xunantunich and officially launching a Chaa Creek-built racing canoe named for his grandmother’s, Queen Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee.

“Prince Harry and the Royal family have a long and deep history with the people of Belize, and I think it’s great that Team Belize is supporting his charity and needy children in the UK,” Mr Waight said.

Colin Dyer, Chief Executive of WellChild said, “This is a wonderful unique gesture from the Belize Olympic Team and it is fantastic that they want to adopt us… giving something back to a UK charity and a local Belize charity is a great way of involving us in the London games.”

Mr Waight said Team Belize’s actions and participation in the 2012 Olympic Games is another indication that Belize is coming of age. “It’s very gratifying that as a small developing Caribbean nation we’re able to stand proud alongside other nations and compete on the world stage. It’s all part of Belize’s growth since we achieved independence in 1981 and makes all Belizeans feel honoured. We want to ensure that Team Belize never forgets that we’re all behind them in London.”
